This third edition tracks reported developments between 15 and 21 August 2026 that may affect electoral participation, human rights and democratic governance in Nigeria. Particular attention is given to the post-Osun electoral environment, security, access to voting, disinformation, political inclusion and the wider conditions that shape meaningful participation.
The reporting period reflected a mix of immediate electoral concerns and longer-term democratic governance issues. In Osun State, reported shooting at a collation centre, allegations of disenfranchisement of hijab-wearing Muslim women, and an alleged attack on the governor’s convoy highlighted continuing concerns around electoral security, inclusion and political violence after the governorship poll. INEC also identified localized electoral violence, vote buying, hate speech, disinformation and foreign information manipulation as threats to the 2027 elections. Beyond elections, flash flooding in Abuja and poor road infrastructure in Ogun raised questions about how environmental and infrastructure failures can affect movement, livelihoods and participation. The period also saw renewed debate on religiously framed political rhetoric, policing reform, protection of children from political campaigns and the findings of an international pre-election assessment
