THE TAP ELECTORAL & HUMAN RIGHTS MONITOR – Monitoring Electoral Integrity, Human Rights and Democratic Governance in Nigeria

EDITOR’S NOTE

The sixth edition tracks reported developments between 8 and 14 September 2026 with implications for human rights, electoral participation and democratic governance. This edition covers political violence, security, electoral technology, access to justice, economic conditions and civic participation.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The reporting period highlights the connection between the security environment and meaningful political participation. Reported attacks on political gatherings in Enugu, disruption of a presidential candidate’s movement in Benue, and a nationwide security alert concerning possible attacks on schools, places of worship and NYSC camps underscore continuing security concerns.

The edition also records developments relevant to electoral administration and institutional readiness. INEC’s reported position that responsible use of artificial intelligence in elections depends on strong institutions and effective governance places safeguards and oversight at the centre of discussions around election technology. Other reports concern access to justice, protection of life and economic pressure. Together, these developments show that the electoral environment extends beyond election-day procedures to the wider conditions in which citizens, candidates and institutions operate.
